Best Swedish and American solutions unite in Prentice logging heads

Best Swedish and American solutions unite in PrentBest Swedish and American solutions unite in Prent.

For more than a decade, US Lake States and Canadian loggers have relied on the durability and productivity of Fabtek fixed and dangle processing heads, while loggers in South America and Europe have depended on Swedish-designed Votec heads. The Fabtek and Votec heads have been brought together in a new line of Prentice heads designed to meet the harvesting and processing requirements of loggers worldwide. The heads, which can be mounted easily on excavators and purpose-built wheel or track harvesters, are available in a variety of sizes with models for both hardwood and softwood applications.

With few moving parts and no guide bars, the Prentice heads are simple to operate and maintain. All major functions are controlled from the cab and a single cover over the hydraulic valves provides easy access to hydraulic and electrical components. Built-in diagnostics make troubleshooting simple.

Various high speed or high torque motor sizes are available. Feed roller styles include spiked, machined, debarking and rubber with chain. Topping saws are available as options and all saws have an automatic chain tensioning system. Expander bolts are used on most heads to greatly increase pin and bushing service life.

The DASA control and measuring system allows the operator to monitor processing and make adjustments from the comfort of the cab. Upper and lower knives can be adjusted separately.

The Saw Home-Position Sensor is an innovative safety feature that makes it virtually impossible to feed forward when the saw bar is out. The sensor also enables the operator to make the cut faster, thus saving bar and chain consumption and minimizing wood damage.

With heavy-duty rotators and one-piece C-frame structures, several models are ideal for large diameter hardwoods, as well as hemlock and douglas fir. The heads tilt forward to allow the extended picking arms to grab a stem from a deck. Feed rollers cradle the stem with just enough traction to get the job done fast without marring the wood.

The Forestry Division of Blount, Inc., is a leading manufacturer and worldwide marketer of timber harvesting equipment and industrial tractors and attachments. Products are marketed under the Prentice and CTR brand names through a dealer network to customers in the timber harvesting, materials handling, land reclamation, pulp, paper and lumber mills and utility businesses. Through a licensing agreement with Caterpillar, the division also manufactures forestry equipment under the Caterpillar and Cat brand names. Headquartered in Zebulon, USA, the Forestry Division operates three manufacturing plants and a parts distribution warehouse. The parent company of Blount, Inc., is Blount International, Inc., headquartered in Portland.
