Improved global economic conditions, meaning more trade and exchange between people, have generated a dramatic growth in transport in recent years. Demand for transport will continue to grow. The critical question is how to ensure that future demand for logistics services is compatible with less environmental impact and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable transports ultimately rely on the ability of transport buyers, transporters and vehicle manufacturers to set the right priorities.
The Bus Division of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG is supporting a tour on biodiversity initiated by the Federal German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety with a particularly environmentally friendly city bus which complies with the currently strictest voluntary exhaust-gas standard EEV.
 The goal of the tour throughout Germany is to draw public attention to the value and benefit of biodiversity. MAN is one of the few manufacturers which can fulfill the demanding environmental standards of its vehicles with the sophisticated MAN PURE DIESEL technology. The innovative common-rail engines are fitted with the electronically regulated CRTec particulate filter, which filters up to 99 percent of the particulates out of the exhaust gas and is particularly efficiently monitored.
Beside the almost complete lack of particulates, according to all the available studies the bus also wins high marks with regard to the CO2 emissions. With a full capacity, depending on the model and variant, the value per passenger kilometre is under 10 g CO2. With the new MAN hybrid bus, which will be ready for series production in 2010, 25 percent of the diesel can even be saved. For an annual kilometrage of about 60,000 kilometres this amounts to an annual reduction in CO2 of up to 10 tonnes! The four completely free of CO2 MAN city buses with hydrogen combustion engines are undergoing a fleet test in Berlin in tough day-to-day service. By the end of 2008 there will be 14 buses of this type.
Sustainable transport solutions for the future climate change are considered to be the greatest challenges of our time. Meeting this challenge by curbing CO2 emissions is a top priority today for all the bus manufacturers.
