Ulyanovsk Automotive Plant, UAZ, today a part of Severstal-Auto, Russia`s major automotive holding, recently has celebrated 65th anniversary of its foundation.
The history of Ulyanovsk Automotive Plant, one of the oldest companies of Russian automotive sector, started in 1941, at the beginning of the World War II, when a decision was made to evacuate all major industrial facilities of Moscow to Siberia, Ural and Volga. The plant was based on Moscow automotive plant ZiS.
During Soviet time, UAZ gained a reputation of a large manufacturer of light-duty rough-terrain vehicles and off-road vehicles.
Since 2001, the plant has been developing as a part of automobile holding Severstal-Auto. UAZ has been profoundly modernized, and production of a new lineup of vehicles has been launched.
In 2003 Ulyanovsk plant started to produce new off-road vehicle UAZ Hunter. At the same time two investment projects were realized to create plant`s own production capacities to produce Spacer axles and helical transfer gears.
In 2005 UAZ`s production line released an off-road vehicle of new generation – UAZ Patriot, and in July 2006 the company launched the production of Japanese trucks ISUZU. A project of creation of a versatile civil vehicle is being developed. The total number of all investment projects being realized at the plant equals to 80.
During all recent years UAZ pays particular attention to the quality of production. In 2003 a new quality strategy was accepted. In December the company received an ISO certificate version 2000.
