Sany Corp., a manufacturer of machines and related components for the building and construction industry, has won Chinese government approval to build a plant in the United States, potentially becoming the first Chinese machinery maker to assemble equipment in the U.S. Sany will initially invest $9 million in the U.S. plant, rising to $50 million three years later, the company"s executive president Xiang Wenbo said.
Headquartered in Changsha, Hunan Province, the People"s Republic of China, the company manufactures trailer and truck-mounted concrete pumps, vibratory rollers, bulldozers, excavators, motor graders, asphalt-paving machines and tower cranes.
"The plan is for Sany to ship parts to the U.S., churn out finished products, and sell them in North America market," he said. "Money won"t be a big problem as the project will be carried out in phases." Privately owned Sany, based in the central province of Hunan, has the backing of the Chinese government for the plant.
Xiang, along with other Sany senior executives, visited the U.S. last month to select a site for the plant, and a decision will be made by the end of the year. "The Chicago area could be an ideal site for our plant as it is the homebase of many U.S. manufacturers."
Sany executives said assembling and selling products in the U.S. is a dream of many Chinese companies. "If we make it, we will be the first Chinese machinery firm to have a plant in the United States," another senior Sany executive said.
