Caterpillar to get rid of 50 jobs
Caterpillar Inc. plans to close its New Ulm, manufacturing plant.
Fifty workers are employed at the plant, which makes parts for paving equipment. The company attributed the plant closure to the restructuring of its global paving business.
Some New Ulm workers may also be relocated to Brooklyn Park, the company said. Other workers would receive severance benefits and be eligible for outplacement services.

Carlyle wins the fight for Xuzhou
China"s Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, which has agreed to sell a controlling stake in its biggest unit, Xugong, to U.S. private equity firm Carlyle Group, has dismissed the threat of a counter-bid by a domestic rival. Xiang Wenbo, executive president of heavy machinery maker Sany Corp., said that Sany aimed to take control of Xugong Group Construction Machinery Co. In October Carlyle agreed to pay $375 million for 85% of the unit.

Komatsu Australia has reported its New South Wales Hunter Valley branch at Mt Thorley is shaping up as a successful investment for the company, with a number of significant sales made in recent months, resulting in a busy outlook for deliveries throughout 2006.
The company said as a result of the facility there has been a significant expansion in the population of Komatsu mining equipment in the Upper Hunter, requiring the branch to substantially increase its service and support capabilities.

Minority groups prefer Caterpillar
US "Minority Engineer" magazine readers ranked Caterpillar fourth out of 50 top places to work. They ranked the employers based on which place they would most like to work or which one they believed provided a positive working environment for minority groups.
Caterpillar ranked sixth last year on the magazine"s list. Employers were ranked by the frequency they were cited by respondents to a 2005 Annual Career Preference Survey.
