Siemens has shown the press the first of Class 380s that are being constructed for ScotRail, at their Krefeld works. The class 380s will be delivered to the UK between September 2010 and March 2011. The Class 380 will be fully compliant with crashworthiness standard EN 15227 - designed to improve protection for staff and passengers.

Developed from the Desiro UK family, Class 380 has lightweight aluminium bodyshells with a bolt-on steel structure at the front end. The patented extendable gangway developed with Hübner is a prominent feature of the design.

One car will have two wheelchair spaces, and they will be the first trains in the UK to be fully compliant with the Persons with Reduced Mobility Technical Specification for Interoperability. A fully-electronic train management system is fitted.
