The Armored Brigade of the Greek army has accepted into service the first Leopard 2A6 HEL supplied by German armored vehicle builder Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). The new tank is the latest variant in a long line of Leopard-family tanks. The 2A6 HEL features a Rheinmetall Defence Electronics command & control system (known as Iniochos in Greek service), a Rheinmetall 120-mm./L55 main gun, improved protection against top attack, extra air conditioning and auxiliary power unit and a meteorological data sensor.
The first tanks were commissioned by the 25th Bde in Xanthi. A total of 170 Leopard 2A6 HEL main battle tanks are to be supplied under a 1.7-billion-euro ($2.7-billion) contract signed in 2003, which also includes armored recovery vehicles (ARVs), armored vehicle launched bridges (AVLBs), driving and shooting simulators, as well as a simulation center.
