MTU's Series 4000 engine continues to set standards in the mining industry for safety, reliability and fuel economy. In doing so, it has become the engine of choice for several of the world's top equipment manufacturers. MTU has preferred engine supplier relations with Hitachi, LeTourneau, Liebherr and Terex. The latest version of the Series 4000 is a fully compliant EPA Tier 2 certified engine. Using a liquid-cooled exhaust system, the engine surface temperature is maintained below 200 degrees Celsius, safely below the auto-ignition point for combustible fluids such as oil and diesel fuel. This significantly reduces the risk of fire hazard for mining equipment, enhancing operator safety.

The 12, 16 and 20 cylinder versions have maximum horsepower ratings of 2,250 bhp, 3,000 bhp and 3,750 bhp (1,680 kW, 2,240 kW and 2,800 kW), respectively. The Series 4000 also achieves high fuel economy with MTU's proprietary second generation common rail fuel-injection system and ADEC electronic engine control management. Depending on application, the Series 4000 is between 5% and 15% more fuel efficient than competitor engine models, resulting in substantial cost savings over the life of the engine.
